Baseoil

a)Group I Base Oil Grading

Group I base oils are classified into different grades based on their kinematic viscosity at 40°C. The most common grades include:

Common Group I Base oil Grades:

Grade Kinematic Viscosity (cSt at 40°C) Typical Applications
SN 70 6 - 9 cSt Light lubricants, blending stocks
SN 100 10 - 12 cSt Hydraulic fluids, gear oils
SN 150 14 - 18 cSt Automotive lubricants, general-purpose oils
SN 250 22 - 28 cSt Industrial lubricants, marine oils
SN 300 28 - 34 cSt Compressor oils, process oils
SN 500 40 - 55 cSt Heavy-duty lubricants, engine oils
SN 600 55 - 65 cSt Heavy gear oils, greases
Bright Stock 90 - 150 cSt High-viscosity applications, gear oils

Understanding the Grades:

•SN (Solvent Neutral) grades indicate the solvent-refined process used in Group I oils. •Bright Stock is a high-viscosity base oil commonly blended with lower-viscosity oils for better load-carrying capability.

Selection Criteria:

•Lower viscosity (SN 70 – SN 150): Used for lighter applications such as hydraulic fluids and light-duty lubricants.
•Medium viscosity (SN 250 – SN 500): Common in automotive and industrial lubricants.
•Higher viscosity (SN 600 – Bright Stock): Used in heavy-duty applications like marine oils and greases.

b) Group II Base Oil Grading

Group II base oils are hydroprocessed mineral oils that are more refined than
Group I, offering better oxidation stability, lower sulfur content, and higher saturates. They are widely used in modern lubricants due to their improved performance characteristics.

Common Group II Base Oil Grades

Grade Kinematic Viscosity (cSt at 40°C) Typical Applications
N 60 / 70 6 - 9 cSt Light lubricants, blending stocks
N 100 10 - 12 cSt Hydraulic oils, compressor oils
N 150 14 - 18 cSt Automotive lubricants, gear oils
N 220 / 250 22 - 28 cSt Industrial lubricants, marine oils
N 300 28 - 34 cSt Turbine oils, process oils
N 500 40 - 55 cSt Engine oils, heavy-duty lubricants
N 600 55 - 65 cSt Greases, heavy gear oils Bright Stock 90 - 150 cSt High-viscosity applications, gear oils

Types of Group II Base Oils:

• Saturates: More than 90%
• Sulfur Content: Less than 0.03%
• Viscosity Index (VI): 80 – 120
• Processing Method: Hydrocracking & Hydrotreating
• Color: Clearer & lighter compared to Group I
• Performance: Improved oxidation stability, lower deposits, better thermal stability

Selection Criteria:

• Lower viscosity (N 60 – N 150): Suitable for light-duty lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and compressor oils.
• Medium viscosity (N 220 – N 500): Common in automotive and industrial lubricants.
• Higher viscosity (N 600 – Bright Stock): Used in heavy-duty applications like marine oils, gear oils, and greases.

Group II base oils are increasingly replacing Group I due to better performance, longer drain intervals, and compliance with stricter emission regulations.

c) Group III Base Oil Grading

Group III base oils are severely hydrocracked and hydroisomerized mineral oils that offer high purity, better oxidation stability, and a higher viscosity index compared to
Group I and II.
These oils are often referred to as synthetic or synthetic-like due to their high performance.

Common Group III Base Oil Grades

Grade Kinematic Viscosity (cSt at 40°C) Typical Applications
N 4 3.5 - 4.5 cSt Passenger car motor oils (PCMO), light lubricants
N 6 5.5 - 6.5 cSt High-performance engine oils, industrial lubricants
N 8 7.5 - 8.5 cSt Heavy-duty engine oils, gear oils
N 10 / N 12 9.5 - 12 cSt Marine and industrial lubricants, synthetic blends Bright Stock Equivalent 90 - 150 cSt High-viscosity applications, premium gear oils

Key Features of Group III Base Oils:

• Saturates: More than 90%
• Sulfur Content: Less than 0.03%
• Viscosity Index (VI): Above 120
• Processing Method: Severe hydrocracking, hydroisomerization, and catalytic dewaxing
• Color: Water-clear and highly refined
• Performance: Superior thermal and oxidative stability, low volatility, and better fuel efficiency Selection Criteria:
• Lower viscosity (N 4 – N6): Used in synthetic engine oils, transmission fluids, and fuel-efficient lubricants.
• Medium viscosity (N 8 –N-12): Suitable for heavy-duty engine oils, gear oils, and industrial lubricants.
• Higher viscosity (Bright Stock Equivalent): Used in premium high-viscosity applications.

Group III base oils are commonly used in modern synthetic motor oils, meeting stringent environmental and fuel efficiency standards.
